How Do I Go About Moving To A Special Care Home?
Some homes are a shared living experience where operators and residents live together. Others are fully staffed and the owner lives elsewhere but stay closely involved with daily operations. Some homes accommodate 2 to 6 residents while others can go as large as 60. All homes are licensed by Family & Community Services and are compelled to follow a manual of standards to help guide them in providing quality care. Licenses are renewed yearly and inspection by all necessary departments is mandatory.
Potential residents contact their local Department of Social Development 1-800-442-9799 to begin the process of being assessed by a social worker and approved for admission to a special care home. Through the assessment process, financial need will be explored and funding is available to cover the cost of living in a special care home. Residents pay approx. $74/day (those approved for subsidy only pay a portion, the rest is funded). The assessment process can vary in the time it takes to complete, it all depends on each individual situation. The Special Care Home operator, Department of Social Development, your Doctor, the Hospital Social Worker, and Extra Mural are some of the people that can help you through the assessment.
Many homes provide the same basic features, but vary in unique qualities. Browsing through the "Find a Home" section of our site will help you to choose a few homes you may like to go and visit. The location, services provided, and other unique qualities are detailed there.
